The following press release is glued to the back of the photo: “Exotic and fascinating are the mysterious maiko or apprentice geisha of Japan distinguished by their elaborate kimono, traditionally lacquered jet-black hair and heavy, brocaded long obi (sash) draped down their back. In Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan and home of the most noted geisha schools, the maiko begins her training as a teenager. To become a highly specialized entertainer she learns the art of dancing, make-up and dress, singing, music, flower arranging, tea ceremony and conversation.” January 1972.
